Hey future CA 👋
If you’ve started your articleship or are about to begin, you’ve probably wondered — “How much leave can I take?” It's an important question, especially when exams, health, and life events come into play.
Let’s simplify the ICAI’s official rules and understand what kind of leave you're allowed as an articled assistant.
🆕 For Students in the New 2-Year Scheme
If you're doing your articleship under the new 2-year scheme, you get:
✅ 12 days of leave for each year
🗓️ That’s 24 days total during your entire articleship period.
That’s it — short, simple, and clear!
🧾 For Students in the Old 3-Year Scheme
This one's a bit more detailed.
Your total leave is calculated as:
🧮 1/7th of the total time you’ve actually worked, excluding the days you were already on leave.
📌 The maximum leave allowed is 156 days over the 3 years.
📝 What About Exam Preparation?
You can take:
📚 Up to 3 months of leave to prepare for exams
🧮 Or your remaining leave balance, whichever is less
🕒 Just make sure to apply at least 15 days in advance to your Principal.
🎓 Extra Info That Most Students Miss
Here are a few helpful points to keep in mind:
- If you appear for ICAI exams, those days count as working days — they’re not counted as leave.
- Same goes for attending ICAI training, like AICITSS or any recognized academic courses.
- If your Principal agrees, you can also attend ICAI seminars, student conferences, and they’ll count as part of your training — not leave!
- At the end of your articleship, you’ll need to submit details of the events you attended, along with your training diary/report.
💡 Final Thought
Remember — leave is your right, but it comes with responsibility. Plan it smartly. Communicate clearly with your Principal. And don’t waste it!
Whether it’s preparing for exams or attending seminars, the key is to balance learning and rest during your CA journey.
We hope this makes things clearer for you 😊
Stay focused, and good luck on your journey to becoming a Chartered Accountant!
