CA Articleship Stipend: What You Need to Know
Are you a CA student wondering about the stipend you'll receive during your articleship? Understanding the stipend rules is crucial, and we're here to break it down for you in simple terms.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has specific regulations regarding the minimum monthly stipend payable to articled assistants. This ensures that students receive fair compensation for their training.
How is the Articleship Stipend Determined?
The stipend you receive largely depends on two main factors:
- The population of the city/town where you are undergoing your articleship.
- The year of your articleship training.
Let's look at the current minimum stipend rates based on the population of the service place and the duration of your training.
For Articleship Under the New Scheme of Education & Training (Two Years)
If you are undergoing your articleship under the new two-year scheme, here are the minimum monthly stipend rates:
Cities/Towns having a population of twenty lakhs and above:

Cities/Towns having a population of 20 lakhs and above:
- During the first year of training: ₹ 4,000
- During the second year of training: ₹ 5,000
- During the remaining period of training: ₹ 6,000
Cities/Towns having a population of 5 lakhs and above but less than 20 lakhs:
- During the first year of training: ₹ 3,000
- During the second year of training: ₹ 4,000
- During the remaining period of training: ₹ 5,000
Cities/Towns having a population of less than 5 lakhs:
- During the first year of training: ₹ 2,000
- During the second year of training: ₹ 3,000
- During the remaining period of training: ₹ 4,000
How is the Stipend Paid?
Your Principal (the CA under whom you are doing your articleship) must pay the stipend monthly. This can be done in one of two ways:
- By a crossed account payee cheque
- By depositing the amount directly into a bank account
Finding the right articleship opportunity is often a key concern for CA students. Many students look for firms that offer good training and adherence to stipend rules.
