CA Articleship Leave Rules: What Every Student Needs to Know

Navigating your CA articleship can be a demanding yet rewarding experience. One common question among students revolves around leave policies. Understanding the rules for taking leave during your articleship is crucial for planning your studies, managing personal commitments, and ensuring a smooth training period.

How Much Leave Can a CA Articled Assistant Take?

According to Regulation 59, an articled assistant is generally eligible for 12 days of leave for each year of their practical training.

However, if your practical training period is for three years, you can earn leave at a rate of 1/7th of the period you actually served. There's a maximum limit of 156 days for this earned leave. If you are undergoing practical training for three years and need leave for preparing for your examinations, you can be granted leave for up to three months or the extent of your leave due, whichever is less. Remember, you need to apply for this leave at least 15 days in advance to your Principal.

Important Points Regarding Leave:

Applying for Leave: Generally, leave will be granted if you give reasonable notice to your Principal.

Examination Leave: Days you spend appearing for examinations conducted by the Institute (ICAI) or attending an accounting academy recognized by the Council are counted as part of your actual articleship period. This means these days won't reduce your articleship tenure.

Seminars and Conferences: Attending conferences, including Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (AICITSS) conducted by ICAI, or any seminar organized by the Institute (including Regional Councils or Students' Associations), is also counted as part of your training period, provided you have your Principal's consent. Your Principal is also encouraged to support your attendance at such events relevant to chartered accountancy.

Reporting Seminars/Conferences: You must submit the details of any seminars or conferences you attended to the Institute along with your Diary/Summary Report of Diary when you complete your training period.

Understanding these leave regulations helps you effectively plan your articleship journey. Many CA students look for practical experience and guidance during their articleship.
